Get Involved

Engaged citizens strengthen democracy

One of the founding tenets of The Philadelphia Citizen is to get people the resources they need to become better, more engaged citizens of their city.

We hope to do that in our Good Citizenship Toolkit, which includes a host of ways to get involved in Philadelphia — whether you want to contact your City Councilmember about the challenges facing your community, get those experiencing homelessness the goods they need, or simply go out to dinner somewhere where you know your money is going toward a greater good.

Find an issue that’s important to you in the list below, and get started on your journey of A-plus citizenship.

Vote and strengthen democracy

Stand up for marginalized communities

Create a cleaner, greener Philadelphia

Help our local youth and schools succeed

Support local businesses

Ali Velshi Lays Out the Stakes of the 2024 Election

The MSNBC host and Citizen board member says it's OK to be concerned about Biden's age. But the larger concern is democracy itself

It is impossible not to recognize the threat to democracy that Donald Trump poses, says Ali Velshi. From trying to overturn the 2020 election to promising to exact revenge on his enemies using the Department of Justice if reelected to the 900-plus-page playbook that lays out a plan for seizing and consolidating power known as Project 2025, the 45th president has clearly indicated that a second term in office could spell the end of the American experiment.

And yet Americans have become distracted by President Biden‘s disappointing June 27 debate performance. The prospect of a chief executive well into his 80s is weighing on voters’ minds. But what should be on voters’ minds is the threat to democracy.

There are two candidates poised to win the 2024 presidential election. One does not stand for democracy and has plans to dismantle our government and seize unprecedented power. The other is three years his senior and has already proved his ability to serve at the highest levels of the U.S. government, tired or not.

“Today, our Great American Experiment is at risk of collapse,” Velshi warns. “Rid yourself of the notion that this is simply a race between two parties. This is a fight to preserve our hard-fought freedoms.”
