Since the Dobbs decision, women are under greater threat of being criminalized for their pregnancies, and the health and lives of pregnant women are in greater danger. Ali Velshi breaks down how draconian abortion bans enacted across several states have not only resulted in women in Georgia and women in Texas dying, but in the systematic criminalization of women’s bodies.
Miscarriage is the most common pregnancy complication in America, but today we are seeing cases becoming criminal investigations. This may be “the most dangerous chapter of the post-Roe era,” Velshi says, as the criminalization of miscarriage threatens to make abortion care more complicated and dangerous even in a “safe” state.
The Trump administration has revoked guidance on emergency abortion care issued by the Biden administration, adding requirements that hospitals “protect the life of the unborn child.” This signals a federal-level attempt to carve up abortion protections even in states where the right is still protected.
Abortion is healthcare. Emergency abortions are emergency healthcare. Turning miscarriage, a common medical outcome that only happens in pregnant women, into a matter for the police to investigate as a crime is a frightening snapshot of America in 2025.
