President Trump has threatened to block the opening of the Gordie Howe Bridge between the Detroit Michigan and Windsor, Ontario in Canada. This bridge should be a win for America. Instead, it has become a political football used by the Trump administration to punish Canada. Ali Velshi explains, “[The bridge] is financed by Canada and built with American labor and materials. It’s not a prop. It is the circulatory system of a shared economy.”
Between the U.S. and Canada is the most valuable land-based trading corridor in the world. Interfering with infrastructure like doesn’t punish Michigan Democrats or Canada. This punishes auto industry workers, truck drivers, farmers, manufacturers, small businesses, and families on both sides of the border. It is not toughness, it is recklessness.
Velshi welcomes to the show Mitch Landrieu, former Infrastructure Coordinator in the Biden administration, and former Export-Import Bank of the United States chairman Fred Hochberg to discuss the threats the president is making against the Gordie Howe Bridge and the Gateway Tunnel under the Hudson River.
Hochberg points out that Trump’s last-minute threats are the opposite of what infrastructure requires, stating, “Infrastructure takes steadiness, resolve, a lot of money, and it makes all of us all more productive.”
For Landrieu, the president’s behavior is more than just damage to our infrastructure development. “Essentially what you have is a president that’s governing in chaos, governing in corruption, incompetence, and cruelty.”
This behavior is costing America a lot, and will continue to do so as long as the President of the United States is allowed to think he can punish those he doesn’t like by obstructing infrastructure projects and trade.
