Ali Velshi Explains Abortion is a Life-saving Medical Treatment

The MSNBC host and Citizen board member on why every American with the potential to get pregnant is in grave danger

The anti-choice movement has spent decades lying to Americans about what abortion is, why it exists and the real reasons why they want to strip Americans of the human right to decide if they want to gestate and deliver a child. Ali Velshi emphatically reminds us that abortion is not just a choice. It is, in fact, necessary, life-saving medical treatment.

Right now, in 22 states, strict abortion bans are putting women’s lives at risk. Doctors are refusing care under threat of prosecution, causing permanent bodily harm.

The Center for Reproductive Rights is fighting Texas for denying treatment to two women with life-threatening ectopic pregnancies who were turned away because the treatment for this condition is abortion. Both women eventually received emergency surgeries, each losing a fallopian tube, permanently impacting their fertility.

There are numerous cases across these states where women are being denied life-saving healthcare that doctors and facilities refuse to provide. This is a violation of human rights that puts every person with a uterus of reproductive age at risk.
