2024

Together in 2024, we practiced citizenship, celebrated civic all-stars, and showed up to vote. We worked to turn out voters in the presidential and senatorial election in partnership with Changing the Conversation Together. You helped grow our How to Really Run a City podcast with former Mayor Michael Nutter and former Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed, named one of Bloomberg Cities Network’s top 10 podcasts to add to your playlist.

You nominated local heroes for our inaugural Citizen of the Year Awards, in which we recognized civic all-stars from groundbreaking disease researcher to block captain. You joined us to relaunch the Rad Awards, in partnership with Leah Kauffman’s Rad Girls, to honor kickass Philly women and allies. And so much more …

2023

In 2023, our daily reports, civic-minded events, Citizen podcasts, and calls to action continued to reignite democracy in Philadelphia. We acted locally to hire Philadelphia’s 100th mayor with our Ultimate Job Interview editorial and event series. More than 100,000 people turned to our voting guides to learn more about all the candidates, including for City Council. The How to Really Run a City podcast continued for its second year, alongside the daily original podcast, CitizenCast.

We welcomed hundreds of citizens to the 6th Annual Ideas We Should Steal Festival and, earlier in the year, you helped us name and fame Integrity Icons — the public servants who go above and beyond in pursuit of the common good.

Leon Higginbotham with a mural and dedication breakfast, to shining a light on community change agents like intergenerational poverty buster Chekemma Fulmore-Townsend and civic-minded tech entrepreneur Chris Cera – The Citizen covered a lot of ground in 2022.

2021

Amidst the pandemic, The Citizen stayed true to our mission introducing our audience to the people and ideas that just might make our city better. We launched our first-ever narrative podcast on gun violence called “Philly Under Fire,” identified a cohort of 30 emerging leaders coined Generation Change Philly, and so much more …

2020

In times of crisis, when institutions seem shaky and community is fraying all around us, there is something in the American spirit that springs into collective action. The Citizen saw evidence of that as online traffic more than doubled in 2020. That jump in readership directly led to action as an impressive 58 percent of readers reported they did something to make their city better after hearing about an idea on our site.
