Thanks to expansive city-mandated protections for its LGBTQ+ citizens, Philadelphia has positioned itself as one of the rainbow-friendliest cities on the planet. But that doesn’t mean all the work is done to ensure protections for all of our LGBTQ citizens.
There are still rampant inequalities in the workplace. LGBTQ people—and especially Black transgender women—are the victims of far too much crime. And young people still face the risk of being kicked out of their homes because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Yes, there is still a lot of work to be done. And thankfully there are tons of awesome LGBTQ organizations in Philadelphia working toward the changes we need—from nonprofits serving LGBTQ+ youth and shelters fighting homelessness within the community to health centers providing the care and resources needed to keep LGBTQ people safe, healthy and thriving.

Attic Youth Center provides a community to LGTBQ+ adolescents who feel alone and are questioning and struggling to find a sense of identity. Attic Youth Center has been helping kids and teens fight against homophobia and other societal obstacles since 1993, aiming for future generations to always feel accepted and proud of who they are. Bread and Roses works to better schooling, jobs, and the community within Philadelphia by raising money and making grants to local organizations with similar goals.
