Allan Domb, also known as the “Condo King” of Center City’s affluent Rittenhouse neighborhood, became one of the few experienced business leaders to join Philadelphia City Council after a largely self-funded campaign in 2015. Domb, 67, served nearly two terms as an at-large member, resigned in August to embark on a “listening tour,” and declared his intention to run for mayor after the midterm elections on November 15, 2022.
Throughout his tenure on City Council, the Center City landlord — he owns more than 400 properties in Philly that are worth more than $400 million — has continued to work in real estate.
Domb distinguished himself on Council by seeking out dollars-and-cents solutions to city problems. He donated his salary to Philadelphia public schools, badgered Mayor Jim Kenney when the City misplaced a cool $33 million, and pushed for a wage tax refund for low-income families (which Kenney ultimately vetoed). Not surprisingly, he also helmed the Council’s Fiscal Stability and Intergovernmental Cooperation committee. He describes himself as a practical yet passionate problem solver.
Like fellow mayoral hopefuls Cherelle Parker, Maria Quiñones Sánchez and Derek Green, Domb has long identified poverty as Philly’s most pressing issue, to which Domb has said jobs and better education are the solutions. More recently, he told interviewers that his priority is safety, citing fear of both his constituents and suburban neighbors.
Here’s what else we know about Allan Domb
- HE GREW UP WORKING CLASS — shining shoes at age four, working two newspaper routes in his North Jersey hometown, attending college at night, washing dishes.
- HE BOUGHT HIS FIRST PROPERTY … AT AGE 14.
- FINANCIAL LITERACY IS AN EDUCATIONAL PRIORITY for Domb, who has pushed for public and private schools to include more teaching on fiscal responsibility.
- COUNCIL TERM LIMITS have been another priority for Domb.
- SO HAVE COMPETITIVE BUSINESS TAX RATES, whose collection and reduction he believes will bring more businesses and jobs to Philly.
- A RESTAURANT OWNER HIMSELF, he has been a big advocate for the streateries that have helped restaurants survive during the pandemic.
- SHOP-RITE OWNER JEFF BROWN, another mayoral racer, may have fired up Domb to run himself.
