Listen: Ali Velshi on Pre-Election Inflation Conflation

Recent polling suggests the economy and inflation are voters’ biggest concerns going into the midterm elections this November 8. These concerns are valid — and entirely usual. But one American political party is blaming the wrong culprit, says Citizen Board Member and MSNBC host Ali Velshi.

“High inflation is bad. It’s really bad. But it’s not the fault of Joe Biden or Democrats. It’s not even, a uniquely American problem,” says Velshi. Covid, the supply chain crisis, and the war in Ukraine are causing prices to rise and bank accounts to dwindle, he says. That’s why Inflation is happening all over the world.

“There are over 100 economies with inflation rates higher than America’s,” he says. So, when political candidates like Adam Laxalt, the Nevada Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, blame the other party for the economy without offering a solution, they are both wrong and unhelpful.

Want a true crisis to vote about? How about democracy.

“Inflation will probably subside, as it typically does in a normal functioning economy, while the destruction of our democratic system has irreversible long-term consequences,” says Velshi.
