Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper made his reputation on working across the aisle with his Republican counterparts in the legislature to pass gun control legislation and budgets, among other things. Former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman has long held her own reputation as a moderate Republican focused more on getting things done than playing partisan politics.
At The Citizen’s inaugural Ideas We Should Steal Festival, they talked with MSNBC host Ali Velshi about just how rare that sort of governance is these days—and why America needs it more than ever.
“Compromise is a dirty word these days,” Whitman said. “You hear it and people think you lost something—but there is no one group that has all the right answers.”

In the course of the discussion, Hickenlooper offered two Ideas We Should Steal: Mail in voting. And open primaries. Both have increased turnout in Colorado.
And Whitman offered one Idea We Should Steal: Bringing high-speed MagLev trains to the Northeast, which would go from Philly to New York in under 30 minutes.
