Ideas We Should Steal Festival 2018: Tackling Gentrification With Bikes and Stories

At The Citizen’s inaugural Ideas We Should Steal Festival, Pedal to Porch Executive Director Cornetta Lane proposed an idea that might seem radical in this day and age: Actually getting to know your neighbors.

Lane’s Detroit-based nonprofit organizes neighborhood bike rides, in which participants are invited to listen to their neighbors sharing stories from their front porches. In Detroit, it’s been an effective way of improving the relations between the newer and older residents of rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods.

”Who are the neighborhood anchors? Who are the natural story tellers?” Lane asked the crowd. “Rebranding a neighborhood is not a very neighborly thing to do…go figure.”
