Part of the world’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has been to consider how to survive without importing Russian fossil fuels. Some countries — Germany in particular — are now considering transitioning away from oil full stop.
Citizen Board Member and MSNBC host Ali Velshi discusses new research by the independent think tank RethinkX, which says that switching from climate change-causing, non-renewable energy to self-sufficient renewables like solar and wind won’t just be better for the environment: It will be less expensive, too.
“It is possible to wean the biggest countries in the world off of fossil fuels while keeping economic prosperity as a top priority,” he says, “Germany has signaled that it is ready to do this. if Europe’s largest economy can launch a bold new era of clean energy, then the rest of Europe — and maybe the rest of the world can do it too.”
